Sony Pictures - Rent

http://www.sonypictures.com/movies/rent/index.html

Okay, this is so cool. Last year, this was my birthday present - Mom and I went to see Rent when the tour came down here. (Thank you, Steve!)

And now, less than two weeks after my birthday, it's gonna be a movie! :)

Sounds like they got a few of the guys from the original. Mimi is a recast and the clips with her make her sound...older? Not cute? Like they were going for sexy instead. Bummed by that thought, but what can ya do?

Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp are in it though. :)

This will be cool as long as it is a straight transition from the musical and not like that weird as hell re-write of Phantom of the Opera that came out a bit back.

Saw that playing in a Suncoast once when I was flipping through their manga display, took me several minutes to even start to recognize that it even might be similar to the same story.

You know, I haven't seen that one yet. Want to, but haven't.

A few years ago, PBS did a special honoring Andrew Lloyd Webber, and all these great stars came out and did songs from his musicals. And (believe it or not) Antonio Banderas did the Phantom's part of 'Phantom of the Opera' and that became one of the sexiest performances of that song. Ever. Like I taped it and ran just that song over and over. Sarah Brightman was the other half of the duet, and I swear...Dayum.

I used to OBSESS about the musical of Phantom when I was in high school, so when the movie came out I grabbed my one friend from that time that's still inthe area and with whom I still speak, and we went to see the movie. And there were huge swaths of it where I could recite the lines with the actors, they were just pulled straight from the show (which, yes, I admit, I saw a number of times. Maybe 3, maybe 4). If only the guy they'd got to play the Phantom had some... oh, I don't know.. charisma.

*Sigh*

Rent looks good though. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Yeah, the thing that worries me is that the same might happen with Mimi. What was so awesome about that character was how damned cute she was. It made her sexy.

From the snippets of soundtrack at the site, it seems like they went for sensual sexy instead. That might be disappointing.

Still looking forward to it.

Hmm, I have the Phantom of the Opera on cd, the cd boxed thingy of the songs and score, and saw it when it came through Portland a long time ago ( gyah.. now there are memories of a gf and date I had been actively forgetting.. ).

But for some reason when I saw the movie, the bits I saw just didn't seem like quite the same story.

May have to actually rent it and watch the full thing instead of staring up in confusion at a TV showing it in a DVD store then if it is an actual faithful reproduction of the musical.

They did add a couple of extra scenes in the movie, and were able to open out the scope of it a bit beyond what they could do on stage, so maybe that's what you saw.
