Maybe it's because I grew up in one of those weird melting pot cities, but Angel in Rent trips me out. :) She's such a fun, sweet character, and unless you go into the theater (movie or stage) completely closed-minded, you have to giggle when she dances around singing about drumming the dog into it's swan dive.
I just got home from going to see the movie, and this is in no way any kind of review. I'd be totally biased anyway. If you don't like musicals, don't go see it. If you like your musicals spit-shined and polished and technicolored, don't go see it. And if you point out errors or unrealisms in movies (because we all know movies are all about realism :P) or like your movies modern with neat technical effects and nifty camera angles, don't go.
If you grew up in the eighties when AIDS was scary as hell and society had to begin learning to deal openly with alternate lifestyles, go. If you saw Philidelphia and cried, go. If you ever loved anyone HIV-positive, go. If you liked the stage version, go. If you love artistic expression, go!
If you need something life-affirming that makes you cry and celebrate being alive, go!
I wondered on the way to go see this if they'd be able to capture the energy that was teeming in the theatre when we'd gone to see the stage version last year. I wondered if this actress would be Mimi-like the way I'd seen the character in my head. I hoped it would be good. I had nothing to worry about, and it was phenomenal. Cannot reccomend it enough and want to go back.
It's not pretty. It's not dressed up. It's so very good.
Anyway, needed to give vent to all that excitement. Cried through half of it, I think, and not just for the heart-breaking parts, but for the joy in it.
No day but today. :)
