An Old Chestnut

A newspaperman was sent to cover the Comedians' Convention and was surprised to see the various comedians go on stage and simply recite numbers to the audience.

"What's going on?" the newspaperman asked another comedian.

"Oh, well, we've all heard each other's jokes a million times, so to save time, we have just numbered them and tell them that way."

The newspaperman watched the proceedings. The comedian onstage was reciting numbers to a bored crowd.

"Sixteen!"

"Ninety-eight"

"Two hundred and four!"

At this number, however, the audience was sent into hysterical laughter. The newspaperman plucked at the sleeve of his host and asked, "Hey, how come you laughed at that joke but not the others?"

His host, wiping his eyes in mirth, answered, "Oh, oh, well, it's just that we have never heard that one before!"
