I think, once the dust settles, this will turn out to have been for the best for everyone involved. Many players have been varying levels of unhappy on both sides for a long time.
Even if this may have been a difficult surprise and did not roll out according to a plan that was doomed to the same results in the end anyway, the cliques (whether members of either will admit that they certainly belonged to one) have finally been seperated to find their own playgrounds. Hopefully that will lead to less wailing and gnashing of teeth for whatever is left of both groups as they move forward with new intentions and/or designs for how to do things better.
For the players that have felt caught inbetween, how much will really change? Coalition Chat will be modified in SOME cases (FOUND House, for instance, hopes to maintain all links) and all groups will not be represented on a single forum any longer. Ingame, everyone will be able to seek out and roleplay with whomever they desire, just as has always been the case.

PS, in a fight between Reese and Abby, Abby would totally win. I know, I've actually written a couple. Reese was almost a regenner because of those spats. He takes damage like a Tex Avery cartoon character.
