Friends ask me this a lot, and there's some good advice in this article at the About: Bipolar site. It doesn't all apply to the role of friend, but it's good advice to have at hand for someone who has a family member in the same situation as well.
And sometimes, it just boils down to patience, something which Mike seems to have an infinite supply of, and I'm just so grateful for him every day.
