For anyone who plans on going out tonight...

I generally like to put up some more humorous things like the first PSA below, but the reality is that this subject really hits home with me. The "Drive Safely" sign you see above is on the side of the road where my grandfather was killed by a drunk driver. He used to go out to the airport to watch the planes take off and land, because it made him feel closer to my grandmother, who used to enjoy going out there.

The day before my grandfather's accident, I'd been talking to my mom about how we were short on grocery money, and he showed up at my door unannounced with a couple of bags full of items from a local discount bakery store. He always did little things like that. Everyone remembers him for his kindness, his strengths, etc. He wasn't old and feeble, or ill. He was independent and travelled often.

The man who killed him was in his twenties. He was just running up to the gas station a few minutes from his house. He rear-ended my grandfather's car, running him off the road and into a tree. My grandfather died instantly. The young man, however, is still in jail.

You can paint drunk driving in whatever light you like with whatever take on it you want, but in the end - whether it's a few beers, a quick drive, or a long night of partying - it still means there's a good chance that someone will end up dead and someone will end up in jail or prison.

Drunk or sober, be careful out on the roads tonight.

For me it's the annual herd the drunks night, which I have done every year since I was 18, and now it's even more fun with the advent of cell phone cameras.
